A Pure Letter from One of the Brightest Stars of Our Time. From Jung Kook.

Harper’s BAZAAR: BTS’s Goyang concert, BTS WORLD TOUR ‘ARIRANG’ IN GOYANG, wrapped up just yesterday. It marks the group’s first world tour in about four years. How does it feel?
Jung Kook: It had been a long time — a really long time — since our last concert, and because we had put so much heart and effort into preparing for it, I didn’t feel any particular nervousness or anxiety. But it did feel as if I had stepped in to another world, even if only for a moment. Now, I’m spending sleepless nights feeling excited about traveling around the world on tour and meeting ARMY everywhere.
I definitely feel most like myself when I’m on stage, dancing and singing while hearing the audience cheer. Even when my throat hurts and I’m drenched in sweat, that’s actually when I feel the most alive.
Harper’s BAZAAR: This was your first time meeting BAZAAR, and your first cover shoot with us. When I saw the concept draft, the phrase “an extraordinary everyday life” came to mind. It felt like a day in the life of an eccentric star who spends even his time at home in a way that’s far from ordinary. How was the shoot for you? By the way, everyone on set remembered you as a true gentleman.
Jung Kook: I liked everything about it — the mood on set, the timing, the pace. It was all very welcoming. I actually find photo shoots a little difficult. I still haven’t fully gotten used to them. But this shoot with BAZAAR became a really fun memory for me. (laughs)
Harper’s BAZAAR: You joined us for this cover as HUBLOT’s global brand ambassador. Your connection with HUBLOT goes back to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. HUBLOT was the official timekeeper at the time, and you performed “Dreamers” at the opening ceremony. It was especially meaningful because you were performing in front of an entirely new audience of football fans.
Jung Kook: I remember that stage as something I took part in with a lot of joy and excitement. More than anything, it was an honor just to be there. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made that moment possible. And if I ever get the chance, I would love to perform there again.
Harper’s BAZAAR: How do you relate to HUBLOT’s artistic vision? In what ways do you think Jung Kook and HUBLOT resemble each other?
Jung Kook: I’d say HUBLOT and I share a similar kind of visual language. There’s this subtle sense of kinship between us. I’m someone who moves more from the heart than from the head. In other words, rather than explaining information, I feel more comfortable and familiar with conveying the mood of a moment. I think that raw sense and atmosphere are what we have in common.
Harper’s BAZAAR: While preparing for the album ARIRANG, you held a songwriting camp with the members. You once recalled, “I think we wrote around 100 songs. We ate, worked out, showered, slept, and focused only on making music.” Do you feel that experience helped you grow musically or changed the way you look at music?
Jung Kook: I think my perspective always changes depending on the situation I’m in at the time. In the same way, I saw and learned so much during this songwriting camp. To put it simply… I still have a very long way to go. (laughs)
Harper’s BAZAAR: Looking back on the entire process of preparing this album, what was the most enjoyable moment? The recently released music video for “2.0” was a comedic homage to the film Oldboy, so I imagine there must have been plenty of laughter on set.
Jung Kook: First of all, I just wanted the album to come out quickly. So every moment of making the album was bound to be enjoyable. With “2.0,” learning the choreography was especially fun. It had been such a long time since all the members had gathered together to dance.
Harper’s BAZAAR: The Jung Kook who sings “FYA” and the Jung Kook who sings “Like Animals” feel like completely different people. A famous vocalist once said that a singer is, in a way, an actor who tells stories through melody. What is it like for you? Do you sing all the diverse songs on this album as one Jung Kook? Or do you bring out different personas to match each lyric and melody? Or is it the result of intentional performance?
Jung Kook: I don’t think I’m someone with many different personas. Rather than calling them separate personas, I’d say it’s closer to carrying out a kind of performance.
Harper’s BAZAAR: Just like your motto, “I’d rather die than live without passion,” your desire to become a better singer has brought you this far. How much do you believe effort matters in becoming a great artist?Jung Kook: Personally, I think it’s half talent and half effort. But just because effort makes up half of it doesn’t mean you only have to give 50 percent. You have to put in more than 100 percent just to reach that 50 percent.
Harper’s BAZAAR: Even the brightest stars must have human worries of their own. What is one personal concern you have these days?
Jung Kook: Hmm… How can I become happier? (laughs)

BAZAAR BTSの高陽コンサート が昨日幕を閉じました。約4 年ぶりに再開するワールドツアーですが、感想はいかが ですか？

JUNGKOOK 久しぶりの、本当に久しぶりのコ ンサートで、全力で準備する過程があったため、特別な 緊張や心配はありませんでしたが、少しの間でも別の世 界に入ったような感覚でした。今は忙しくツアーを回り ながら、世界中のARMYの皆さんに会えると思うと、胸 が高鳴って眠れない夜を過ごしています。確かにステー ジ上で観客の歓声を聞きながら踊り歌うときが、一番自 分らしさを感じます。喉が痛く汗まみれになり大変です が、むしろそのときが一番『生きている』と感じるんで す。

BAZAAR BAZAARとの初めての出会いであり、 初めてのカバー撮影でした。私はビジュアルコンセプト を見て、『非日常的な日常』というキーワードが思い浮 かびました。まるで家の中でも普通ではない方法で時間 を過ごす少し風変わりなスターの一日のようでもありま した。撮影の感想を聞かせていただけますか？あ、それ と現場にいたスタッフたちは皆さんが口を揃えて、あな たが『ジェントルマン』だったと振り返っていました。

JUNGKOOK 撮影の雰囲気や時間、スピード、すべてが 気に入った撮影でした。もともと私は雑誌の撮影は苦手 なタイプです。なかなか慣れませんでした。それでも 『BAZAAR』との撮影は楽しかった思い出として残って います。(笑)

 

BAZAAR HUBLOTのグローバルブランド アンバサダーとして、今回の表紙を担当させていただき ました。HUBLOTとの縁は2022年カタールワールドカ ップまで遡ります。当時、HUBLOTは公式タイムキーパ ーを務め、あなたは開幕式で『Dreamers』を披露しま した。サッカーファンの前でのステージは、いつもと違 う新しい観客の前で披露したステージという点で特別で した。

JUNGKOOK 私もとても楽しく、わくわくした気 持ちで参加したステージだったと覚えています。何より も、その場に立てたこと自体が光栄でした。この場を借 りて、機会をくださったすべての方々に感謝の意を伝え たいですし、機会があればぜひもう一度公演をやってみ たいです。

 

BAZAAR HUBLOTの芸術的ビジョンにどう 共感しますか？JUNGKOOKとHUBLOTはどの点で似て いるのでしょうか？

JUNGKOOK HUBLOTと私は雰囲気 が似ているのでしょうか？不思議な一体感を感じます。 僕は頭よりも心で動くタイプの人間なんですよね。言っ てしまえば、何かの情報を説明するより、その瞬間の空 気感を伝えるほうがずっと自然で慣れているんです。そ ういうリアルな感覚や雰囲気が、どこか似ている気がし ます。

 

BAZAAR 今回のアルバム『アリラン』を準備し ながら、メンバーとソングキャンプを行いました。「約1 00曲ほど書いたと思う。食べて運動して洗って寝て、音 楽制作に没頭していた」と当時を振り返りました。音楽 的に成長したり、音楽を別の視点で見るきっかけになっ たと実感していますか？

JUNGKOOK 私はいつもその 時々の状況によって視野が広がるように感じます。同様 に、今回のソングキャンプでも多くのことを見て学びま した。言うなれば、私はまだまだです。（笑）

 

BAZAAR 今回のアルバムを準備する過程で、最も楽しい瞬間はい つでしたか？ 最近公開された2.0のPVは映画『OLD BO Y』をコミカルにオマージュした作品なので、撮影中は 笑いが絶えなかったのではないかと思います。

JUNGKOOK まずアルバムを早くお見せしたいと思っていまし た。だからこそ、アルバムを作り上げていくすべての瞬 間が楽しくて仕方なかったです。'2.0'は振り付けを覚え る時が特に楽しかったです。メンバー全員で集まって踊 るのは、久しぶりのことでしたからね。

 

BAZAAR 『FY A』と『Like Animals』を歌うJUNGKOOKは、全く別 人のようです。ある有名なボーカリストが「歌手とはメ ロディーのあるストーリーを演じる一種の俳優だ」と言 っていました。JUNGKOOKの場合はどうでしょうか？ 今回のアルバムに収録された多彩な曲は、すべて一人の JUNGKOOKとして歌うのでしょうか？それとも、それ ぞれの歌詞やメロディに合ったペルソナを引き出すので しょうか？それとも意図的な演技の結果なのでしょう か？JUNGKOOK 私はペルソナが多様な人間ではありま せん。他のペルソナと表現するよりも、演技を行う側に 近いです。

 

BAZAAR 「情熱なしで生きるより死んだ方 がいい」という座右の銘のように、歌が上手くなりたい という『向上心』がJUNGKOOKをここまで導きまし た。優れたアーティストになるためには、ある程度の努 力が必要だと思いますか？JUNGKOOK 個人的に才能半 分、努力半分だと思います。しかし、努力が半分だと言 っても、50%だけしなければならないわけではありませ ん。100以上の努力して、やっと全体の50%を達成でき ます。

 

BAZAAR 輝かしいスターにも人間的な苦悩が一 つはあるでしょう。最近、あなたのささやかな悩みは何 ですか？ JUNGKOOK うーん··· どうすればもっと幸せ になれるでしょうか？（笑）
